The muscle increases in size chiefly through enlargement of smaller and less frequently excited fibers. There is increase in connective tissue and formation of more new blood channels so that the muscles become firm and even hard, thus their enduring power is increased. |

There are a number of studies which go to substantiate the fact that physical activity programmes executed regularly go a long way in maintaining good cardiac health. Similarly there is evidence based on animal experiments that exercise increases the formation and growth of new coronary channels in the heart. It cannot be denied that pleasurable physical activity not only gives a sense of well being, but also acts as an outlet for the pent up emotions, worries and tensions of daily life. In fact there is hardly any part of the body’s orchestra which does not benefit in one way or the other from exercise. It improves the adaptation of the organs to the various stresses and strains. Vigorous muscular contraction means more venous return of blood to the heart, better pulmonary ventilation and diffusion of gases in the lungs and so excretion of carbon dioxide. Thus, since there is improvement in respiratory and cardiac reserves of the body, it can stand the strain in better capacity. |
